I RECENTLY came across this picture of four telegraph boys on their motorcycles.
It is an Oxford Mail photograph from 1964, so presumably it was taken somewhere in the city and the four riders were Oxford lads.
I remember the days when few people had telephones and the only way to keep in touch with friends and relatives was to write a letter.
If a message was urgent, you could send a telegram, which would be delivered to your door by one of the telegraph boys on his motorbike. We received several telegrams on our wedding day.
What a difference today with mobile phones, text messages, emails and the rest. Somehow, getting a text message isn’t quite the same as receiving a congratulatory telegram!
