THE BBC studied a group of Oxford pupils in October 1982 to find out what it was like to work in a hospital.

The youngsters, all fifth-formers at Cowley St John Upper School, were taking part in a new television series.

The corporation had asked the pupils to take part in episodes that focused on work and leisure.

For a week, the 12 youngsters visited different work places in the city asking people about their jobs and attitudes to work.

They also went to a city youth club to talk to unemployed young people.

Their teacher Cathy Shea said pupils would also be visiting a police station and drawing office.

She said: "We have done a thorough preparation for the visits and the pupils know what sort of questions they want to ask.

"But once they arrive it is up to them."

The children then reported back to their classes and handed in essays on the trips.

The programme was due to be shown the following February.
