The local history group turned the village into a living museum in 1988, with many reminders of the past. Richard Taylor, in his role as a wheelwright, demonstrated how to use a spoke gauge in making a cartwheel.

The village athletic club rebuilt its clubhouse at a cost of £40,000 after it was destroyed by fire in 1986. Village peace was shattered in 1980 with a barrel race through the streets. Among the winners were Jean Williams, Eona McDougall, Carol Bryan and Lynn Moylan, who won bottles of Champagne after easily beating the opposition.
