AS a former carer for a relative with Alzheimer’s disease, I am horrified by the proposed increase in charges for those attending day care in Oxfordshire.

I was only able to continue caring for my relative at home because I had the support of day care.

Oxfordshire County Council is proposing an increase from £4.18p to £15 a day for attendance at a centre. The rise in transport costs will be from 82p to £5.

These proposed increases mean that many will now find day care unaffordable.

This in turn will have a major impact on carers and increases the possibility of their relatives being put into care because they cannot cope at home.

It is important for all of us that we continue to keep good services for an aging population with an increased risk of dementia. I would urge your readers to fill in the consultation document on these proposals at the website www.oxfordshire.gov.uk, click on ‘Have your Say’.

Alternatively write to the county council with your concerns. The period for consultation expires at the end of the month.
