A DETAINEE from Moldova hanged himself in a shower block at a Kidlington detention centre after being told police wanted to question him about a rape.
Oxford Coroner’s Court was told yesterday that Ianos Dragutan, 31, from Northampton, was found hanging at Campsfield House Immigration Removal Centre on August 2 last year.
Paramedics were called to the immigration centre in Langford Lane after staff found Mr Dragutan, but were unable to revive him.
During his three-day stay at the centre, Mr Dragutan’s solicitor told him in a phone call that Northamptonshire Police wanted to question him about a rape allegation dating back several years.
Officers were waiting to arrest him at the centre on the day he died.
UK Border Agency spokesman Helen Morgan said the agency had been reviewing Mr Dragutan’s case and he had been granted temporary admission to the UK.
The court heard earlier that Mr Dragutan, who first arrived in the UK in 2002, had arrived at Campsfield House after serving three months in Wandsworth Prison for possessing false documentation.
Contractors MITIE currently run Campsfield House on behalf of the UK Border Agency, and centre manager Paul Morrison said procedures had been reviewed following the death.
Jurors returned a verdict that Mr Dragutan took his own life.

Tag the detainees to regularly report to police stations and save tremendos suffering and waste of expenditure.
The privately contracted security companies are scamming the system and lobbying further.
