The 75th Society of Wood Engravers Annual Exhibition opens at Art Jericho from Wednesday until October 21.
It is comprised of 130 pieces, all relief-printed: when an inked or painted engraved block is used to produce an image on paper. Engraving is a traditional English medium, now practised by artists worldwide. The subject matter is as varied as the artists themselves, ranging from landscapes to architecture, animals to abstract. Illustrated here is John Bryce’s Fireworks on the Thames.
By contrast, Linda Farquharson has produced two delightful animal portraits. In Blackbird, a cross-section of ground reveals the half of the worm the struggling bird has yet to reach and two bugs, snug, in their underground hideaway.
Joint winners of the Rachel Reckett Open Prize are Geri Waddington’s The Drying Room and Peter Lawrence’s Triple Quay. Where he emphasises the repetitiveness of quayside activity as three geometric images, presented as a vertical triptych. Peter will be demonstrating wood engraving at 3pm on October 6 and also inviting people to try their hand.
