Sir – All will welcome the excellent results of the latest primary school tests.

As one who has been critical of councillor Tilley’s appointment, I am happy to acknowledge that I was completely wrong, as she has managed to achieve not only a significant percentage improvement, but to have achieved it in such a short time.

Focusing on the early years is surely right, as the involvement of parents in such as children’s centres is a great advantage. I am sure that the Oxford Reading Campaign and the financial contribution of the city council should enable this improvement to continue.

My apologies for previous doubts, councillor — more power to your elbow.

Crucial to this improvement, of course, has been the dedicated and skilled professional expertise of the teachers, who do not always receive the appreciation they deserve; they are entitled to a glow of pride that their success has been duly recognised in these results.
