Sir – One must, I suppose, raise a reluctant cheer for the St Edward’s School proposal for a concert hall in Summertown, at least someone has recognised the problem at last.

It is sad, though, that the city council has not encouraged the incorporation of a concert hall and performance facility in the new proposals for the Westgate Centre redevelopment. This could be along the lines of the splendid St David’s Hall in central Cardiff. As in Cardiff, at the Westgate Centre car parking and public transport are readily to hand.

I doubt whether the University will help, I’ve heard it rumoured that they do rather well out of rent for the very uncomfortable Sheldonian Theatre (I listened to a concert there once years ago and vowed never to do so again). So it is up to the city council, I think. Maybe some newly-elected councillor would care to take the project up.

There are probably many potential concert goers who would contribute to a municipal concert hall fund, I certainly would.

To get under way, though, it probably needs a big money (million-plus) donation from some rich local philanthropist. Any offers — who would like their name on such a hall?
