Journalist Marcus Ferrar is chairman of the Friends of Summertown Library and an expert on Eastern Europe. In A Foot in Both Camps (LBLA, £7.99) he describes how he came to terms with the conflict between his childhood in postwar Britain and his friendly German relatives. His mother was a refugee from Nazi Germany and his book describes his feelings as he visits Dresden, a city destroyed by the Allies. His personal memoir is interwoven with the history of both countries, and their attitude towards each other over the past century.
