A PAINTING by South African artist Irma Stern will fund a scholarship for African students at Oxford University.
Portrait of a young Mpondo could fetch up to £300,000 when it is auctioned by Bonhams on October 17.
The 1930s painting, formerly part of the collection of Lady Oppenheimer, of Johannesburg, passed to her sister Lady Balfour of Inchrye, before being given to Oxford University. Prof Valpy FitzGerald, head of the university’s department of international development, said: “This wonderful Stern portrait of a young African warrior has hung on our walls for many years and it will be sad to let it go, but the resources from the sale will make a significant contribution to the lives of young scholars.”
