I WRITE regarding lecturers’ pay. It is extremely difficult to gauge how much anyone could reasonably expect to earn. A salary would, reasonably, reflect qualifications, performance targets and ability to motivate both self and others.

University lecturers’ pay starts at £17,500 and a JRF (junior research fellow) earns the same remuneration. This does not seem entirely fair.

JRFs are similar to post-doctoral fellows and deserve to be suitably well rewarded. But could lecturers’ pay start at, say, £19,000, reflecting the greater responsibility?
