Sir – In relation to the proposed Barton West development, councillor Cook says “Thames Water are covering their backs. I don’t think it will have that big an effect. But Thames Water has to try to get its pound of flesh out of any developer.” (Report, August 23).
Given that under plans for new homes in Barton, sewage and foul water will pass through New Marston, it seems highly irresponsible of the councillor with the development portfolio on the executive board to contradict the view of Thames Water.
Is councillor Cook unaware of the long-term flooding problems, which include foul water and sewage overflow on to private property, that have afflicted New Marston for over 20 years?
If so, in his position he should make sure that he is properly briefed before he makes such statements.
Bill Holman, Chairman, New Marston (South) Residents’ Association
