Protesters from left Michelle Parkinson, Joella Lynch, Charlotte Isles and Caroline Brown from the Oxford Oxfam Group dressed as the famous outlaw – with with Daniel Burton in the garb of a traditional banker – to stage a play explaining the campaign for a tax on banks which they say could raise £20bn a year in the UK – a so-called Robin Hood tax.

Ms Lynch, 26, from Cowley, who also works at the charity.

She said: “With the French having signed up to a similar financial tax, we think it’s a really great way to start raising the profile again and pressuring the UK Government and other countries in the process.”

Tourists and shoppers stopped to photograph the group, and to watch the play Picture:OX5363 Ric Mellis
