"It’s all women!” exclaimed the gentleman in the row behind me, gazing round at the packed New Theatre audience.

Obviously he had no idea what kind of show he’d come to see, but as the first pulsating number Omigod You Guys hit him squarely between the eyes, he would soon get the picture. Another clue might have been the mighty swell of ooohs and aaahs that greeted Gareth Gates (on his opening night in the show) when he made his first entrance.

A quick recap on the story: dizzy blonde Elle junks an UCLA course on “fashion merchandising” to study law at Harvard. Two reasons for this: first to follow her boyfriend, hunk-with-brains Warner (Gates, plainly having a whale of a time), second to prove that blondes ain’t necessarily dumb. She and her pet dog (more appreciative ooohs and aaahs) duly triumph, although she ends up with a different bloke.

Elle receives a terrific performance from Faye Brookes, but the star of the evening for me was understudy Rhona McGregor, playing Elle’s confidante, hairdresser Paulette. She radiates pizzazz, and her scenes with virile UPS delivery driver Kyle (Lewis Griffiths) hilariously send up the whole hunk culture. But it’s the company song and dance numbers that are the true glory of this show. Performed with breathtaking precision, I will never forget either Whipped Into Shape, danced with skipping ropes, or the Riverdance-style Irish routine. You want a feelgood night out? This is it.
