DRINKERS in South Hinksey are still thirsty for a local pub after a deal to reopen the General Elliot fell through at the last minute.

Vale Brewery was close to selling the pub but negotiations collapsed this month.

The pub was Oxford Camra’s pub of the year in 2007 and 2008 but closed in 2009 after the landlord disappeared.

Adrian Porter, 41, of Manor Road, said he was disappointed but confident that the pub could be saved.

He said: “It’s a real shame it has fallen through. But we are still hopeful and believe it’s a viable business and a great site. We have a thriving community.”

He added: “It would breathe life back into the that part of the village. No one wants to see a derelict property. It’s the first building you see when you walk in from Oxford.”

South Hinksey Parish Council chairman Maggie Rawcliffe said: “It’s a great shame.

“The parish is very disappointed. With the right investment it’s a viable site.

Phil Stevens, of Vale Brewery, said: “The buyers for The General Elliot have at the last minute decided not to go ahead with the purchase.

“We will be considering our options in due course, in the meantime any potential buyers are welcome to contact the brewery direct.”
