Think of Oxford’s history, and it’s medieval university buildings that spring to mind, but there is another story, and it is told by local historian Liz Woolley in Oxford’s Working Past.
The elaborate doorway of Frank Cooper’s marmalade factory, pictured, is one of a surprising number of 19th-centuiry industrial buildings which still survive, and they serve as reminders of the city’s development in a period of great economic, social and technological change.
The booklet describes three walks past 25 buildings and sites, including factories, warehouses, breweries, and mills, and structures associated with the generation of electricity, gas and clean water.
