ROY Young used to help The Beatles, playing keyboards on stage with them night after night in Hamburg.

Now the veteran rocker, who lives in Kingston Bagpuize, will be lending a hand on July 26 to raise money for Oxfordshire carers.

He will be making his first appearance in his hometown of Oxford for more than 40 years when he performs at the Who Cares benefit concert at the Oxford Playhouse.

The show will raise money for the Carers Trust, and has been organised by producer and pianist Francis Rockliff.

Mr Rockliff has put together a band also featuring Ric Sanders of Fairport Convention; ex-Status Quo drummer John Coghlan; guitarist Lewis Harding, who performed with The Specials; and saxophonist Otis Lawrence, who has played for Bryan Ferry.

Other musicians taking part include blind singer Sarah Mellor.

Mr Rockliff called Mr Young after reading a feature about the singer in the Oxford Mail.

Mr Young said: “I made my first appearance at a pub in Cowley in the 1950s. But I never got to perform at the Oxford Playhouse until now.”

Tickets for the Oxford show are priced at £15 or £25 for a hospitality ticket. For more details of the show and to order tickets, click on the link.
