OXFORDSHIRE tennis legend Tim Henman will lead the 10th anniversary celebrations at Abingdon’s White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre today.

To mark the occasion, there will be a day of free events and activities to celebrate a decade of sporting activity at the centre, off Audlett Drive.

The Duchess of Gloucester officially opened the centre 10 years ago.

Since it opened in 2002, the £10.3m centre has been used more than 8.2 million times, hosting more than 2.2 million swims and more than 5.2 million visits to the gym, sports hall and other facilities.

Mr Henman, the former UK men’s tennis number one, will take part in a question-and-answer session with members of the public from 11am.

Vale of White Horse District Council’s cabinet member for economy, Elaine Ware, said: “Since opening in 2002 the centre has made a massive contribution to Abingdon and the wider community. The staff and facilities here have led the way in encouraging people to increase their fitness and live a healthy and active lifestyle.

“The first 10 years have been an incredibly successful period, with vast numbers using the centre, including a few well-known names and some up-and-coming young athletes.

“We now aim to build on this success by continuing to provide a first-class leisure service for our residents for many years to come.”

The centre is owned by the council and managed by DC Leisure through Active Nation, a registered charity.
