COUNCILLOR Jean Fooks rightly appreciates the publicity given by your features editor Jeremy Smith, to the need for better toilet provision in Oxford and puts forward some useful suggestions for achieving this (Oxford Mail, July 2).
I recall that this publicity was first given in conjunction with an assertion by Councillor John Tanner that the council had “set aside” £420,000 for the purpose (Oxford Mail, April 23).
Perhaps they will confirm the existence of this sum and say where it can be found as it does not appear in the city council's budget.
I am reminded of the non-existent £300,000 which Councillor Tanner said would be spent on creating a “super-loo” at Gloucester Green when some of the public toilets were closed in 2008 and have not since reopened.
