Do you recognise any of the names from these walls?

That is the question volunteers at a newly reopened playground want Oxford Mail readers to help with.

An abandoned garage at the Blackbird Leys Adventure Playground (Blap) stood empty and overgrown with the key lost when the site closed two years ago.

But when volunteers finally got into the garage last week, they did not find what they were expecting.

Committee member Sue Price said: “That garage has not been used for years, so we thought there might be a lot of rubbish in there.

“But when we got through the doors, we found it entirely empty.

“The walls were painted white and there were a lot of names painted on the walls.

“We have no idea who they are.”

The Blap playground in Blackbird Leys Road reopened to the estate’s children in April after being closed for more than two years.

Volunteers, local parents and children have been working tirelessly to refurbish its equipment and get it back up and running.

The original playground dates back to 1976, sparking a theory that the names could date back decades.

Mrs Price said: “There used to be a nursery on that part of the site, so the names could be children from there.

“Or it could be children who used to use the playground.

“They could now be in their 20s or 30s.”

She added: “We just have no idea.

“The answer will probably be very simple, but at the moment it remains a mystery.”

Volunteers at the playground asked the question at a special Olympic Torch event on Monday. As the torch passed the playground, families gathered for a barbecue and other activities.

Names on the walls include Rachel Hill, Stacey Coles, Zak Taylor, Lewis Foster, Liam Walker and Gill Deacon.
