Great New Cinema Club

Called the Kino Club, it forms part of MAO’s summer film programme. Its choice of screenings have been specially selected to mirror current exhibitions at the gallery and the London 2012 Olympic Games.

According to organiser Anna Fomicheva: “The big idea behind it is for it to be a kind of alternative to a book club: get cinephiles and people who just love a good discussion together to watch a film and then socialise with a few drinks in the gallery’s cafe, meeting and talking about the film. It’s a great night out and hopefully will get people engaged with great cinema.”

The season kicks off tonight with a showing of The Skin I Live In (15). Directed by Spain’s most successful film-maker Pedro Almodóvar, it explores the story of a plastic surgeon (Antonio Banderas) who begins to assume the role of a Creator, exploring both the construction and control of the female body in the director’s typically distinctive style.

The event starts at 7pm and costs £3.

Then, on July 19, it’s all about the muscle with Bigger, Stronger, Faster (PG), a documentary that addresses the ethics of medical intervention in competitive sport.

The event also starts at 7pm.

And finally, on August 2, the season finishes with a screening of Woody Allen’s cult classic Zelig (PG), pictured.

Profiling human chameleon, Leonard Zelig, a fictional 1920s celebrity with a fantastical ability to psychologically and physically take the shape of people he encounters, from jazz musicians to psychoanalysts, the film is described as a “powerful allegory of conformity and its consequences”.

Plus – and this isn’t mentioned – it’s very funny.

Again, the event starts at 7pm and costs £3.
