The Oxford Theatre Guild returns to the lovely setting of Trinity College Gardens for one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, Much Ado About Nothing — a tale of romance, deceit, disguise, intrigue, revenge and razor-sharp wit, all wrapped up in an appealing package that cannot fail to delight.

According to director Joseph Kenneway, the enduring attraction of Much Ado lies in observing “the pleasures and challenges of romance — something for everyone to take joy in”.

Romance, of course, is central to the plot, with people falling in and out of love, and Beatrice and Benedick openly at loggerheads until a little interference from their friends puts things right.

Perhaps more than anything, the play appeals to a range of human emotions. “Everyone loves a good gossip,” says Joseph. “Nothing intrigues quite like someone else’s love life. Everyone likes to laugh — a prank skilfully played, pomposity pricked, a tongue-tied clown, all bright up our life for a few moments. Everyone likes to see miscreants receive their comeuppance — it’s pleasing to see the virtuous win out.”

Of course, there is a darker side as well. “Broken alliances, sibling rivalry, ambition and jealousy are dangerous and deep primal urges, and we see those reflected in the world of the play too.”

But this is comedy and all will come right in the end. “The human spirit and nobler intentions triumph and we end reassured that all the twists and turns have merely been much ado about nothing.”

The combination of England’s greatest playwright in a typically English setting, by one of Oxford’s leading amateur theatre companies, makes this a treat not to be missed.
