SHOPPERS are being reminded to support independent traders across Oxfordshire today.

People are being encouraged to buy at least one item from a local independent shop to celebrate Independents’ Day.

It is part of a national campaign organised by Skillsmart Retail and the National Skills Academy for Retail.

Vincent Montgomery, who runs a traditional butchers in Wallingford Street, Wantage, said: “There are lots of independent traders in Wantage and today we will all try to do something a little bit special for our customers.

“I have created a Wantage sausage, which contains handmade black pudding from Stornoway in Scotland, Cheshire oak gammon, and a pork mix with our own blend of herbs and spices.

“Customers tell us they are very tasty.”

Iain Nicholson, a spokesman for Oxfordshire Town Chambers Network, said: “One of Oxfordshire’s great business strengths is the talented and hard-working entrepreneurs that run independent shops in high streets across our county.

“This is a welcome national initiative to support the wide range of local events, activities and promotions that are helping to drive business in our towns throughout the year.”

To raise awareness of the campaign, independent retailers will display the Independents’ Day logo in their shop windows.
