These are the pupils hoping to have a museum all of their own.

West Kidlington Primary School is one of the six primary schools which have been shortlisted for this year’s School Build SOS competition.

They are competing for a £7,500 grant to help fund improvements to the school building.

It is being offered by Abingdon-based construction company Leadbitter in partnership with the Oxford Mail.

West Kidlington has applied for money to create an indoor-outdoor museum that would allow lessons to take place outside and help the children engage with their subjects.

Headteacher Eugene Symonds said: “What we would like to do is build a community facility which will serve all the schools in Kidlington.

“Children here say they like playing outside but that is not always possible.

“And they like learning from real things.”

The school has had the help of an architect to design the building, which will have opening walls and will include artefacts relevant to the pupils’ topic of study.

Mr Symonds said: “It will have artefacts in it which support the children’s learning at the time.

“It will mean the children’s learning will be much better.”

Mr Symonds added that he hoped the whole of Kidlington would be able to benefit from the facility.

Ian Batchelor, operations director at Leadbitter, said: “We felt that the outdoor-indoor museum idea from West Kidlington Primary School was worthy of a place in the final.

“Their proposal was well supported with background information, photographs and letters from the children expressing their ideas on how they would use this exciting space.”

Schools must now collect the tokens which are being printed in the Mail every day until Monday, July 16.

Anyone associated with the school can collect the tokens, whether they are parents, teachers or grandparents.

At some point during the campaign, a special gold token will be printed which is worth five normal tokens.

Readers should collect their tokens and send them to their chosen school. Photocopies will not be accepted.

The school with the most tokens, which will be weighted according to the number of pupils at the school, will be awarded the grant.

Work will be carried out during the summer holidays.

To vote for West Kidlington Primary School send tokens to West Kidlington Primary School, Oxford Road, Kidlington, OX5 1EA.

Tomorrow we focus on plans by St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Headington to extend their music room.
