Catharine Gregory is a keen long-distance walker. So when she had a baby last year, she was keen to continue her hobby and keep fit.

But she discovered that most of her favourite walks were no longer possible once her son got too big for a sling.

So she has put together a book called Buggy Friendly Walks in the Thames Valley (Countryside Books, £7.95). Although she lives in Berkshire, several of the 20 walks are in Oxfordshire, including a fantastic route from Ewelme. She has tested them with a variety of prams and strollers, but warns that some may be muddy or bumpy.

The Ewelme walk, for example, is only suitable in a dry summer, but she gives an alternative winter suggestion for some of the routes However, they all avoid small kissing-gates, steps and stiles as well as busy roads and she points out that you burn 260 calories an hour on a brisk walk — 80 calories more than when unencumbered. She also includes ideas for family-friendly refreshment stops.

It’s a fantastic idea, which may also be useful for people with mobility problems, or even for wheelchair users.
