A CAMPAIGN to stop dog fouling is being launched in Barton.

Oxford City Council’s community response team will be carrying out a dog fouling blitz as part of the Cleaner, Greener Barton campaign.

They will also be issuing fixed penalty notices under the dog control orders.

City councillor John Tanner, board member for Cleaner, Greener Oxford, said: “We don’t want dog owners to let their dogs foul the footpath. Nobody wants to step into dog poo or get it all over the wheels of a pushchair.

“It’s unpleasant, unhealthy and unnecessary. Most Barton people clean up after their dogs but we want to make sure everyone does.”

The city council launched its Cleaner, Greener Barton campaign last month aiming to tackle problems on the estate with litter and to boost recycling rates.

Dog mess is also one of the priorities and the dog warden will be supporting enforcement campaigns in the area and offering a talk on responsible dog ownership to the local primary school.

Fines for dog fouling are £80, or £55 if paid within 10 days. If people fail to pay the £80 fine, they may face fines at the magistrates’ court of up to £1,000.
