BRITAIN’S Got Talent stars The Jive Aces flew into Oxford to launch the spectacular airshow Fly to the Past.

The swing and jazz band, which reached the semi-final of this year’s ITV talent show, will perform at the September 1 and 2 event.

It will be the first year the show at London/Oxford Airport, supported by the Oxford Mail, will run over two days and means it will feature even more flyovers, live music and nostalgia.

Jive Aces lead singer Ian Clarkson said: “We cannot wait for the show.

“We will be playing our good fun and entertaining jive and swing music – with our yellow suits, of course. But I am also looking forward to the airshow.”

Mr Clarkson, who has taken flying lessons, added: “I cannot wait to see the planes, especially the Spitfires. There was a time when flying was unbelievably glorious.

“I think it important that we remember the past because it is such a rich time in our history and the past shapes the future.”

And asked about the yellow suits, Mr Clarkson said: “We used to wear lots of different colours but then we started wearing yellow and people remembered it at festivals.

“They may not have remembered our name but they remembered we were the band in the yellow suits.”

Fly to the Past will kick off on Saturday, September 1, with a concert of music from the 1940s, 50s and 60s, backed by a display of flyovers and pyrotechnics.

The John Miller Orchestra will start proceedings, followed by The Jive Aces and then a 60s tribute band led by Roy Young, who performed with The Beatles.

The bands will be flown into the airfield on vintage planes, as huge screens tell the history of the decades through archive film footage and music.

Sunday’s festivities will feature flyovers telling the history of aviation, starting with biplanes and moving through to World War fighters and on to modern-day jets.

The highlight of the show will be a flyover from the B17 Sally B, which featured in the 1990 film Memphis Belle.

Fly to the Past creative director Francis Rockliffe said: “I hope it will be spectacular and lift people’s spirits.

“I want people to be moved and taken out of recession mode and go back in time and have the peace and quiet of rubbing shoulders with the past.

“It has been shown in all psychological studies that nostalgia has a very comforting sensation.”
