Building work will start this summer on a £3m visitor centre in Oxford for cancer patients and their relatives.
Maggie’s Centres currently runs a support service for cancer sufferers from a temporary building at the Churchill Hospital in Headington.
It has been fundraising for the new centre opposite the oncology unit, which has a treehouse design by Chris Wilkinson of Wikinson Eyre Architects.
Maggie’s Centres chief executive Laura Lee said: “We are really excited to announce that we will be able to start work on our new centre this summer, with the hope of opening our doors early next year.
“Our new centre will allow us to extend our programme of practical, emotional and psychological support to those people affected by cancer.”
Dr Claire Marriott, head of the Oxford Maggie’s Centre, said: “Everyone is delighted with the news that work will start in the summer, and we look forward to the new centre opening in 2013. We had nearly 8,000 visits last year.”
The interim centre is open Monday to Friday, from 9am-5pm, for information, psychological and emotional support, and benefits advice. It caters for drop-in and pre-booked appointments.
