THERE will be some taxpayers who are less than enamoured, particularly in these tight times, to see hundreds of thousands of pounds given to areas like Rose Hill under the broad “regeneration” brush.

They will harumph at what actual good it does to fund something like the Rose Hill News, a free community paper.

The answer is Michael Klimes.

His is a case of helping those to help themselves.

The 25-year-old was desperate to get a foothold in journalism, a competitive industry to enter.

He discovered Rose Hill News was looking for volunteers and his four-month placement built up a body of work that has helped win him a position as an assistant correspondent with a Japanese news agency.

Some may quibble about whether it leads to a permanent career – but Michael has this opportunity in his own hands to make it happen.

“The placement kept me busy and out of my parents’ hair,” he says.

Examples like Michael show there is real worth in these schemes.
