The Forthcoming Marriages announcements on the Court Circular page of the Daily Telegraph are one of the last bastions of glorious snobbery and therefore compulsive reading for me.

Though the rival Times long ago gave up compiling the list in order of rank (it’s strictly alphabetical, blokes’ names first), the Torygraph sticks to the old way. This means — wonderful thought! — there is actually someone sitting in an office at the newspaper reaching judgment on such trying matters as whether the eldest son of a baronet is given precedence over the daughter of a life peer.

During my perusal of the column one day last week I spotted what I took to be an error, with the mother of bride-to-be Ianthe MacKenzie-Beevor said to live in Chicklade, Wiltshire.

Surely this must have been a misprint for Cricklade in Wiltshire? But no. An Internet check proved this comical sounding village exists; it’s near Salisbury, home to 143 people.

But if I can’t point at error there I can in a recent edition of The Times. Not the Thunderer’s own, as it happens, but that of the organisers of the Press Awards who in awarding Peter Brookes the title of Cartoonist of the Year called him “persistently excellent”.

I hope they will not consist in this misuse.
