HIS booming tones might not be ideal for bedtime stories, but town crier Anthony Church’s extremely loud voice will help the Story Museum make itself heard.

The 59-year-old will be helping to direct visitors to the Pembroke Street museum’s Other Worlds exhibition which starts on May 1.

He is one of the first to volunteer at the museum, which is looking for a cast of colourful characters to staff this summer’s events.

Although the museum does not officially open until 2014, the exhibition will be a chance for visitors to see the dilapidated building in Pembroke Street brought to life as a compendium of different fairytales as artists and storytellers take up residence in each room.

Mr Church, who has welcomed the Queen and Princess Anne to Banbury, rubbed shoulders with Colin Dexter and has even taught Peter Andre the tricks of the town crying trade is now looking forward to meeting the story museum’s visitors.

He told the Oxford Mail: “I think it is great to have The Story Museum for Alice in Wonderland and all the history.

“We’ve got some really good literary people in Oxford – like Colin Dexter and Philip Pullman.

Cath Nightingale from the Story Museum said: “We are very delighted that Anthony is getting involved.

“We hope he will broadcast our events in the best possible way – judging by the number of people that are always stopping and chatting to him whenever he’s here he’s a great advert for the city.

“There has been a trickle of volunteers but we’re hoping to get more.”

The Other Worlds exhibition runs from May 1 to May 27 and the museum wants to hear from anybody who can help out as a steward.

The team has a busy summer ahead and is also planning events including a Tea with Alice exhibition and Alice’s Day events in the coming months.
