THE operation at Magdalen Bridge last year was a far more sensible option than the closures of previous times.

It was always a bit of a farce when the barriers closing the bridge for May Morning were lifted early, leading to people jumping anyway.

Last year’s set-up with barriers along the edge of the bridge was far more successful in deterring jumpers and meant the whole vibe of the morning was far more peaceful.

Hopefully an even greater deterrent will be the mere trickle of the Cherwell given the drought that’s still likely to be fully in place.
