Sir – I couldn’t believe what I was seeing in The Oxford Times when a photograph showed Rye St Antony School raising money for charity in such an irresponsible way by letting off 200 balloons.

Do they give a thought to where these balloons may end up? In the sea, where marine creatures will choke on them, and on land, where wildlife will be entangled in the strings and die a painful death.

Raising money might involve some real effort from the pupils — not 10 seconds of mindless fun at the expense of the environment.
