CHRIS Payne’s letter (Oxford Mail, Memory Lane, February 13) re the undergraduate who fell from the Radcliffe Camera: that night I was on duty, making a point at the police pillar, opposite Oriel Street.
I heard a scream and a loud thud/clatter. I went to the rear of St Mary’s Church and found the body entangled in the bike frame. The overhang had defeated him.
What a senseless death. If he was clever enough to get to university, why daft enough to try that? Not much blood, but every bone in his body broken.
The Indian Institute was an easier climb with an enamel chamber pot. It was to prevent such stupidity that students had to be in by midnight and why proctors and bull dogs patrolled the town.
