An 18th-century former butcher’s shop that later became an inn has been given a £550,000 makeover to create a stylish, contemporary home.

Kings Head House in Wootton, near Woodstock, also comes with a one-bedroom cottage which was once the butcher’s abbatoir. It became a pub in the 1920s and remained that way until the current owners converted it to a house three years ago.

Spread over two floors, with a galleried landing and cellar, the six-bedroom Grade II-listed property has exposed timbers and beams and two domes on the roof to allow daylight in the centre of the house.

The dining room includes bi-folding glazed doors to the garden and there is a 40ft drawing/sitting room and a study.

What was the pub car park is now a landscaped back garden with garage.

Owners Tony and Amanda Fay, who ran the King’s Head Inn from 1995 until 2007, commissioned an architect for the transformation which took seven months.

Mr Fay said: “It needed a new slate roof and we dramatically improved the back of the building, which was horrendous.

“The brewer who owned it before us put on a dining room in 1989 which was a yellow-brick rendered box with a flat roof and a complete mismatch.

“The new extension allowed for two extra bedrooms and uses the same stone as the original building.”

The couple are selling the house as they are moving to Gloucestershire to be nearer their grandchild. King’s Head House is on the market for £900,000. Call agents John D Wood on 01865 311522 or visit johndwood.co.uk
