THE breadth of women’s experience will be celebrated at this year’s Oxford International Women’s Festival.

More than 40 different events are planned to mark the two-week festival, which will take place for the 23rd time starting on Thursday, March 1.

Theme of the festival will be equality and diversity, and the programme of events covers everything from poetry to lectures and ‘queer cabaret’.

Festival co-ordinator Debbie Hollingsworth said: “The festival highlights the many issues affecting women in Oxford and across the nations, but it is also a fantastic opportunity to showcase our many talents.”

The aim of the festival is to highlight women’s issues on a local, national and international level, and to support women and organisations campaigning for equal rights and opportunities.

For the first time last year there was a fringe event held in October to keep interest going throughout the year.

The main event will coincide with International Women’s Day on Thursday, March 8, and will take place at Oxford Town Hall, St Aldate’s, from 3-9pm.

Stalls from charities, campaign groups, alternative therapists and craftswomen will be mixed with performances from artists, musicians and dancers.

On the same day there will be a push for women to get more active, with a chance to try out sports at Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre, Pegasus Road.

The festival starts with a performance of the Vagina Monologues on March 1, at the Old Fire Station, George Street.
