A-LEVEL Students are finding out what it is like to be an artist by exhibiting their work in a popular city centre restaurant.

Students from Cheney School in Oxford and Wheatley Park School will have their work on show at The Turl Street Kitchen until February 5.

Head of art at Cheney Tom Lee said: “Showing work in public is a massive part of being an artist but it is not something you normally do at school.

“This is about building the students’ confidence in their work and helping them see themselves as artists.”

Toby Leach, 18, of East Oxford, said: “It is really great to be exhibiting in a public setting. It is good to see what it is like being involved in that world. It is really getting us set up for it.”

Nancy Dewhurst, 17, from South Oxford, said: “It is really nice to have an idea of what it would be like if we went into this world.

“It has given us an incentive to do more, to do work that is not to do with school.”

The Turl Street Kitchen raises funds for the Oxford Hub, which provides university students with social and environmental information and volunteering opportunities.

Community and venue manager Hannah Martin said: “It is really exciting for us to have young, vibrant work on the walls.

“It is also really good for young people to be stretched in their ambitions as artists.”
