DRAGONS swooped into Oxfordshire yesterday to mark the beginning of the Chinese New Year.
According to the Chinese, we have just entered the Year of the Dragon, the 4,709th Chinese year.
Children at Donnington Doorstep Family Centre, East Oxford, played with a colourful giant Chinese dragon and made small paper dragons of their own to mark the event.
Among them was Ruben Rees, three, from East Oxford.
His mum, Anna Sanders, said: “I think when you first introduce children to different festivals they start by learning about the symbols and the pictures and they learn more when they’re older.”
A Chinese lunch was served, and further Chinese-themed activities will be held for the rest of the week.
Kat Morris, a student social worker at the centre, said: “Everyone loved it. It’s all part of the messy play here. It’s brilliant to get creative, especially with something like the Chinese New Year and everyone got really excited about doing the dragons.”
