I AM writing as a regular customer and on behalf of many others regulars of the Old Anchor Inn, Abingdon, to express my shock and disgust at the nature of the review which was published in The Guide (Oxford Mail, December 8).

I understand that reviewing food is a literally a case of personal taste – and I am not doubting that Katherine MacAlister felt that she did not have a good experience at the Old Anchor – however, in writing her article, she seems to have forgotten several key issues.

Firstly to refer to us ‘regulars’ in such a disparaging way ie. “obviously been there for decades” has definitely put quite a few backs up and although she states that she did not want to appear snobbish she had the opposite effect.

Also she seems to have forgotten that this is not part of a huge chain of carbon-copy Pubs, serving plastic food. This is a small family-run concern and her words could have a devastating effect on the business.

We have eaten here many times and have always enjoyed the food, service and ambiance.

The boys who have recently taken it over have done a magnificent job in our view. And although she obviously experienced an ‘off’ day, she has not even given them a chance, just condemned them, without a thought for the consequences of her vicious words.

After reading other reviews in your publication written by Mrs MacAlister, it is clear that she has an aversion to pubs which serve food: “Pubs should stick to crisps”.

I understand that food reviewers, when giving poor reviews, like to rip establishments to shreds.

However, I would ask you not to underestimate the effect of such unjustified reviews on small businesses in your area, particularly during these tough economic times when so many are struggling to survive.

We all feel that the Old Anchor is a smashing local pub, with great food, run by a dedicated, friendly young landlord who did not deserve this assassination.
