THAMES Water sewer flushers are trying to strike a chord this Christmas.

A group of them, left, have uploaded a version of Deck the Halls to YouTube asking people to treat their drains properly over the festive season.

Filmed in a Victorian brick sewer, it asks Thames Water’s 14 million customers to put their turkey fat in the bin, not pour it down the sink.

Last December more than 500 tonnes of lard ended up in Thames Water’s sewer network.

Wrongly flushed fat contributed to 101 blockages which needed to be cleared last Christmas Day.

Rob Smith, Thames Water’s chief sewer flusher, features in the video. He said: “Anything other than human waste and loo roll has no business in our sewers.

“And fat is the biggest no-no of all.

“Christmas is the worst time of year for fat blocking our sewers because of all the turkey grease that gets washed away.”
