YOUNG journalists in Abingdon are having a go at running their own newspaper to serve their school community.

Larkmead School pupils published the first edition of The Larkmead Times this month.

It contains news articles and columns written by Students.

Harry Bowden, 11, who wrote a column about litter in the first copy, said the newspaper was an important voice for the students.

He said: “There are lots of issues people need to talk about and it’s a fabulous way of telling people about what’s happening in Larkmead.”

He said the paper would be a better read for pupils than the school newsletter, adding: “Students have a much greater contribution in The Larkmead Times because all of the columns are written by students for students.”

Headteacher Chris Harris praised the initiative.

He said: “The Larkmead Times is an opportunity for a group of students to write and comment about their school.

“It can be fun, interesting, and at times provocative.

“It is very exciting and is a further example of the growing confidence among our students.”
