COMMUTERS will face a price hike of almost six per cent, it has been confirmed this morning.

The Association of Train Companies confirmed the figure, which comes into effect from January 2.

Oxford commuters travelling into London will see a rise of six per cent.

A peak day return will rise from £51 to £54, a week day season ticket from £105 to £111.30 and a month's season ticket from £394 to £417.50.

ATOC chief executive Michael Roberts said: “Money raised through fares helps pay for new trains, faster services and better stations.

“The long-standing government approach to sustaining rail investment is to cut the contribution from taxpayers and increase the share paid for by passengers.

“The industry is working together to continue cutting costs as a way to help limit future fare rises and offer better value for money for taxpayers over the longer term.”
