MIGHTY oaks from little acorns grow and youngsters from Banbury’s Dashwood School are hoping the tiny trees they nurtured will leave a lasting legacy at a town park.

The pupils planted 22 saplings at Spiceball Park in an attempt to create a new nature reserve.

Banbury Town Council member Ann Bonner joined park rangers and the children to help plant the rowan, birch and flowering cherry trees.

She said: “The school contacted the Grimsbury Community Association to ask if there was a place where the trees could have a permanent home. The council was happy to find a suitable space.”

She said: “I am going to ask the council to consider naming the area Dashwood Copse, so that when these youngsters are grown up they can bring their own children here to show them the results of their labours.”

School teaching assistant Eileen Hartwell said: “We received the plants two years ago from the Woodland Trust. They came in an envelope as very small cuttings. The pupils planted them out and have cared for them.

“It is a wonderful experience for them to be involved in something that will be a lasting tribute to their hard work.”
