WITH reference to the front page story “SHUT DOWN” (Oxford Mail, December 1), it is about time the population of this country stood firm and told those who are supposed to be running this government that we are fed up of being “ripped off”.

I was fully in support of the estimated 6,000 public sector workers who marched through Oxford and those who manned picket lines in protest of pension cuts.

However, I was surprised by the comments of the council chief on page 5.

As he is one of the higher paid public sector workers, I don’t think there will be any danger of any pension cuts as far as he is concerned.

Along with the “golden handshake” that he will no doubt receive for faithful service, he will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Perhaps it was a wise decision to resign as the leader of the council, as no doubt your comments on page 5 will, I believe, have lost you an estimated 6,000 votes.
