YOUR readers may recall the closure of the Summertown post office and newsagents premises about three years ago, in November 2008.

This site has been occupied by Costa Coffee ever since. Costa’s continuing success and expansion into other premises seems to encourage protest and howls of outrage – especially with the ‘bring back the summertown post office’ campaigners.

To be fair to Costa, it wasn’t their fault that the original site shut in 2008. They simply spotted a vacant premises which had already been earmarked for closure.

I’ve always long suspected that those campaigning for another post office in Summertown had a private agenda, namely to try and get Costa closed. But this is never going to happen, as they are commercially successful.

Now another interesting development has occurred.

The other newsagents at the north end of Summertown Parade shut a few Sundays ago.

Let’s hope that the post office lobby quickly realise the obvious opportunity, which ironically could result in the eventual swapping from site one (with Costa) to another.
