SO could R Lee (Letters, November 21) please tell me when was the EU Commission president, or the president of the European Council elected?

No he can’t – as he admits, all the persons of power in the EU were appointed to their roles. The European Parliament does have elected MEPs but the EU Parliament’s powers are far more restricted in the EU hierarchy compared with our House of Commons in the UK, with vastly more residing in unelected officials’ hands.

In addition, power has been transferred to the EU from the UK without any democratic agreement and we are paying billions for this “privilege”.

Mind you, Mr Lee is right in one respect – overspend by our governments over the past ten to 15 years has given us a very high deficit. Consequentially, our economy would be ruined if we were in the Euro – just have a look at the pain Greece, Spain and Italy are suffering as a consequence. The only way the Euro will survive is if the member countries decide on closer political union, i.e. be subject to German economic policy.

In the meantime the world economy is being impacted by these incompetent dithering EU appointees who put their egos above the fate of ordinary workers across Europe.

I’m sure Mr Lee believes in democracy, so he will also support giving the British people the right to decide whether or not we should continue to belong to the EU in its current form.
