I WAS taken aback by the comments made about Elise Benjamin in the Oxford Mail, November 29, by John Kelly.
I have been to many of these very sad repatriation ceremonies and, yes, Mr Kelly is always very well dressed, which I admire.
But Elise’s circumstances are different. She is a working mum and a Lord Mayor. Surely it would not matter what her attire is. The fact is it’s all about respect and Elise attends and pays hers.
After all, this is not a fashion show and Elise looks very smart in her dark outfit and beret.
The families of the deceased soldiers would be pleased Elise was there for them, regardless of her dress.
Now about the bicycle: I am sure Mr Kelly would complain if the mayoral car was used too often and yes, Ms Benjamin uses her cycle and saves Oxford’s council taxes from rising. She also promotes Oxford as a city of bicycles. Well done to her!
Perhaps Mr Kelly could see in his heart to apologise.
