OXFORD: Sir Roger Bannister, pictured, will switch on the city’s Christmas lights this year.
The 82-year-old, who was the first man to run the mile in under four minutes, will help launch the festive season on Friday, December 2.
The switch-on will form part of Christmas Light Night, which annually attracts more than 20,000 people to the city.
There will also be a children’s lantern procession from the Old Fire Station in Gloucester Green at 6pm to the switch-on in St Giles at 6.30pm.
Sir Roger said it was a “great honour”.
