DRINK-DRIVER Jonathan Ashworth has been jailed for three years for knocking down and killing teenage cyclist Tom Kahl.

The 55-year-old was over the drink-drive limit when the borrowed Range Rover he was driving struck 18-year-old Mr Kahl, from Kidlington.

The teenager had been cycling to a friend’s house when he crossed over the unlit country road and was hit.

A urine test showed Ashworth had 112 milligrams of alcohol in 100ml of urine. The legal limit is 107 milligrams.

Mr Kahl had been cycling to a pal’s house in Woodstock, at midnight on July 10 last year when the crash happened on the A4260 near Thrupp.

The court heard how Mr Kahl had no lights on his bike.

Ashworth had admitting driving with no insurance and without a licence before the jury unanimously found him guilty of causing death by careless driving at his trial in September.

The court heard that Ashworth had a string of driving convictions including speeding, drink-driving and driving while using a mobile phone.

Ashworth was also banned from driving for five years.

Mr Kahl’s grandmother Trudy Lowen said: “Justice has not been done.”
