FORMER district council leader and past mayor of Abingdon Janet Morgan was given the Freedom of the town at a special ceremony in the Guildhall.
Mrs Morgan, 76, a Liberal Democrat, moved to Abingdon in 1957 when she was 22, and has served on the town, district and county councils since 1983.
She said: “I was quite overwhelmed when I was told about it.
“It really is a great honour which I don’t think I deserve, but it is very nice to have.”
Julie Mayhew-Archer, Liberal Democrat district council member for Abbey and Barton, said: “She really has done a great deal for the three councils over the years.
“She has given above and beyond,” she added.
